Last week, one of our Managing Partners, Ivo van Breukelen, on behalf of the firm was invited to present a guest lecture at Columbia University about the latest trends in the construction and engineering technology space. We shared our firm’s perspectives on the evolving intersection of construction, technology, and innovation.
Key take-aways:
Digital engineering is becoming the industry standard. Adoption of BIM platforms now exceeds ~70% among large U.S. AEC firms, enabling model-based design, clash detection, and integrated project delivery. The shift toward digital twins is expanding engineering’s role from design to full asset lifecycle management.
Labor shortages are accelerating automation and robotics. The U.S. construction industry faces a shortage of 500k+ workers annually, driving adoption of autonomous equipment, robotic layout systems, and AI-driven scheduling to improve productivity and reduce delays.
Infrastructure spending is fueling ConTech investment. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act ($1.2T) is increasing demand for digital construction tools and data platforms for large infrastructure projects.
Engaging with the next generation of industry leaders is always a rewarding experience.
Thank you to the faculty and students at Columbia University for the warm welcome and thoughtful conversation.
