What Can Real Estate Learn From PSY?

Gangnam Style by Psy hit 1bn views in 159 days - the first ever 1bn view video on YouTube. It was overtaken in 2017. A few stats:

- YouTube paid $8m in ad revenue from views of his video

- It broke the mould for artists in terms of streaming revenue - c.65% of the music industry's revenue is via digital channels

- It had 72 views per second until it got to 1bn. One of the fastest ever.

Gangnam style was a one-off but he changed the model. One of the main creators now is Mr Beast (207m subscribers) who in one of his videos, produced his own version of Squid games.

In 5 days, it got 125m views and the video sponsor (a lightly known gaming company) increased its global downloads by 41% to 1.4m

One of the areas we at The Proptech Connection think will differentiate portfolio performance in the future will be the ability to engage with the digitally native, particularly the next cohort of asset users. The need to be positioned to take advantage of the increasingly frequent, alternative, models is also crucial.

Cyber Security

Recent data from Verizon showed:

- data compromises were 2x more likely to come via a 3rd Party partner, rather than through a company's internal weaknesses.

- most security breaches were done via penetrating a web application rather than through things like email phishing. (So it seems the "recently inherited Prince" who used to spam email me, has got enough cash now...)

With the greater utilization of AI tools, the importance of data security will rise further. Samsung for example, recently banned the use of ChatGPT as code for a new product was being tested via the platform, which was then subsequently hacked.

Raising Is Not Easy

We see many, many decks here at The Proptech Connection. For us, the most successful raisers have the perfect mix of a cohesive narrative – whilst knowing which points to deep dive into.

It isn’t easy - with multiple value props, large fin models, pitching to different types of funds, geographical nuances and conflicting (BS?) advice - “got to show unicorn growth”, “needs to be SAAS”, “Mention ESG”- being some of the common pain points.
